President Donald Trump is no stranger to launching racist and offensive attacks on his perceived enemies, but one rising star in the Democratic Party is refusing to take such attacks lying down, Zeteo’s Martin Pengelly argued Monday, proving to be a formidable opponent for the commander in chief.
On Saturday, Trump launched what Pengelly described as an “Islamophobic and racist” attack on Democratic Senate nominee Abdul El-Sayed by posting an image showing El-Sayed’s wife wearing an Islamic headscarf, comparing her to first lady Melania Trump with the misspelled caption: “Two VERY DIFFERENT America’s.”
Instead of voicing outrage, condemning the remarks or demanding an apology, El-Sayed instead delivered what Pengelly called a “swift and brutal” response.
El-Sayed agreed that the image shared by Trump did, in fact, depict “two very different Americas,” with Trump and Mrs. Trump being “two people who don’t like each other but joined in the interest of making billions of dollars,” and himself and his wife being a couple who want to “build the kind of America where [people] can raise a family.”
El-Sayed also pivoted to Trump’s economy fraught with inflation and soaring gas prices, a response Pengelly described as a “one-two punch.” El-Sayed later delivered another blow to Trump after being asked to respond to the president’s recent remarks calling him “full of s—,” to which he responded: “At least I don’t let mine go in the middle of the Oval Office.”
“In an instant, he created a meme based on memes, of Trump’s supposed digestive incidents behind the Resolute Desk. Placed next to El-Sayed’s ‘Two America’s’ response, it was a short jab, a sharp smack rather than a heavy blow, but it worked, spreading rapidly on social media,” Pengelly wrote in an analysis published Monday in Zeteo.
“Punch, counter-punch. It’s not Demosthenes, but it’s the stuff of politics today, and now a high-profile Democrat speaks it. In fact, the Democratic rank-and-file have been waiting a decade for a high-profile Democrat to speak in this blunt way, to take the fight to Trump and his fellow MAGA bullies.”
