A video capturing a rare moment of whales frolicking just a few feet from the shore has captivated viewers on TikTok.
The clip, shared by @kai.glover, has amassed over 199,000 views since it was posted on October 9. Set against the scenic coastline of Perth in Western Australia, the video offers a glimpse into the natural wonder of the whales’ behavior during their seasonal migration.
The footage begins with a note reading: “POV [point of view] you wake up at 6 a.m. and are lucky enough to see this before work.”
The poster’s voice conveys his astonishment as he says: “It’s 6 a.m. I’ve just woken up and I’m going to work and there’s two whales so close to shore.” The video captures the whales flipping and gliding in the shallow water, estimated to be just two meters (around 6.5 feet) deep.
“They’re flying out of the water,” the man says, his voice filled with excitement. Another note on the screen adds: “They just came from Antarctica.”
Later, he is seen running along the beach, visibly elated, as he watches the whales continue their display. “Oh my God, that’s incredible,” he says as one of the creatures flips again.
Whale migrations provide unique opportunities for visitors to witness these marine giants in their natural habitat, says Tourism Australia, the country’s official tourism organization.
The Australian coastline is a prime location for observing numerous whale species on their annual journeys to and from Antarctica. The site notes that humpback and southern right whales can often be spotted in Western Australia’s south coast regions, including Albany, Bremer Bay, and Exmouth, during the migration season from June to November.
The journey north to warmer waters, which takes place at the end of summer, is crucial for the whales, “as young calves don’t yet have enough blubber on them to withstand the winter temperatures,” Tourism Australia says. Along the way, these majestic creatures can be seen feeding, mating, and calving in the region’s warm waters before returning south to Antarctica.
