Stars stepped out this weekend in celebration of cinema.
Angelina Jolie, Jennifer Lawrence, and Barry Keoghan were among the actors, directors, and other attendees photographed at the annual Governors Awards on Sunday, hosted at the Ray Dolby Ballroom in Los Angeles.
But while some of those celebrities stunned in eye-catching gowns and sharp suits, others made some fashion mistakes.
Here’s a look at the five best and five worst outfits on the event’s black carpet.
Jennifer Lopez sparkled across the carpet in a statement dress that was subtly sheer.
Her Zuhair Murad gown had a halter neckline with a plunging cutout, a floor-length skirt, and top-to-bottom sparkles in thin waves that showed her skin.
The sheer element of her skirt gave Lopez a chance to showcase her signature daring style.
The outfit was also chic and glamorous, especially thanks to the velvet skirt attached to the hips with a floral belt.
Selena Gomez could have had more fun with her outfit.
Gomez has had a standout style year filled with fun, luxurious outfits.
Her sequined Ralph Lauren gown at the Governors Awards could have been one of them. But a few elements of her overall look missed the mark.
The shoulder pads of her dress were a little too sharp, and the actor’s hair was styled in an updo that aged her. Looser waves and a less structured dress would have been more exciting options.
Jennifer Lawrence’s gown with gold accents was the epitome of chic.
She arrived at the event wearing a brown Bottega Veneta dress with ruching at the shoulder and hip.
The detailing was the result of attached gold clips that added shine and style to the otherwise simple gown.
Lawrence’s ensemble was one of the best of the night, complete with an updo hairstyle, gold Ana Khouri jewelry, and a shining clutch.
Angelina Jolie’s simple dress left something to be desired.
Jolie sourced her off-yellow dress, which had a sparkling top above a lace skirt, from The Kit Vintage.
The Los Angeles brand said on Instagram that the dress had no label and that Jolie chose it herself.
But while the garment and Jolie are individually stunning, they didn’t mesh well together. The gown’s color was too similar to Jolie’s hair, and her diamond jewelry was too bold for the simple garment.
Lupita Nyong’o stunned in a black and gold midi dress that flowed as she walked.
Chanel designed her strapless frock, which seemingly had two layers.
Its first was a form-fitting minidress decorated with gold sequins shaped like various animals. Atop it was a shapeless lace overlay embellished with a silver, sparkling circle pattern.
The mixed metallics added a unique element to her outfit, and Nyong’o accessorized to perfection with a diamond necklace and swirled hairstyle.
Pamela Anderson’s monochromatic look would’ve benefited from sparkle or shine.
Anderson has been attending fashion shows and red-carpet events without makeup since 2023 — and the natural look works for her.
However, her understated approach to fashion on Sunday night wasn’t as effortless. She wore a shapeless Giorgio Armani gown with long sleeves and a loose skirt.
Its dark color blended into the event’s black carpet, and her matching black shoes and purse added little to the outfit. A sparkling pair of earrings, a metallic purse, or colorful shoes could have elevated the look.
Barry Keoghan showed how far accessories and details can take classic menswear.
He wore a Dolce & Gabbana ensemble that included a short black jacket, a white blouse with a satin bow, and a low vest that doubled as a cummerbund.
With its multiple pieces and contrasting shades, the suit was unique and eye-catching. Keoghan also wore a statement necklace and gold brooch, making his outfit even more luxurious.
Jude Law took a similar approach but didn’t quite nail it.
The actor wore a four-piece outfit comprised of white trousers, a matching blazer, a white undershirt, and a tie-style scarf. Law completed the look with tan loafers.
Since most of his outfit was the same color, each piece blended together and concealed the fun styling of his neck piece.
Choosing a scarf that matched the darker color of his shoes would have improved the look.
Zoe Saldaña made green her color in a ruched minidress.
Designed by Saint Laurent, the strapless dress had a piece of fabric that extended from its neckline, past its hem, and across her neck to create a scarf.
To boost the glamour of her look, Saldaña added sheer black tights, diamond jewelry, and black sandals with small crystal buckles.
She looked chic, stylish, and appropriately dressed for the fall season.
Jeremy Strong’s take on the color wasn’t as strong.
His mint-green suit featured sharp lapels and pleated trousers, both of which work great on him.
However, the suit’s satin fabric was a bit too shiny for Strong, and its color washed him out in a way that a darker green wouldn’t have.
The pastel shade also would have worked better for a spring event.
