A husband and wife had to think quickly when their daughter found something she shouldn’t have and started asking questions.
Dara, an American, lives in Italy with her Italian husband, Santi, and their two daughters—Skyla, 7, and Savannah, 4.
She describes her family as multicultural, telling Newsweek, “I speak English to my girls, and my husband speaks in Italian.”
An estimated 4.4 million U.S. citizens lived abroad in 2022, according to the Federal Voting Assistance Program, and Italy is home to thousands of Americans, including children.
Dara’s family regularly shares snapshots of their life on the Instagram account @santindarainitaly, and they recently went viral when Dara accidentally captured an awkward moment on camera.
A video posted on October 19, which has since received more than 110,000 likes, begins with Dara eating pizza from a box before being interrupted by her older daughter, who enters the scene with a bottle of Durex lubricant and asks in Italian, “Mamma, what is this?”
Dara’s eyes widen, and she looks to her husband for help. Santi chimes in quickly, telling the children in Italian, “It’s deodorant for your armpits, when someone sweats and is stinky.”
The camera topples over, adding to the chaos, before Dara asks her daughter where she found the lubricant, which she quickly takes from Skyla as Savanna starts opening the bottle.
And adding insult to injury, her daughter tells her, “I guess you are super stinky.” Dara wrote in the caption, “This WAS a family channel.”
She told Newsweek: “We were so mortified when they found that. Actually, I wanted to make a video of my pizza, and they snuck behind me. And I had to come up with a response quick.”
Instagram users loved the clip, with one praising the “good come back on Santi’s part.” The user added: “He’s quick! Bravo.”
“I want to see the episode when she puts it under her arm,” another commenter wrote.
“The look on your face,” a user commented, while another said: “Santi really took the lead on that one. Props.”
Dara said: “The crazy part of this is, this isn’t what it looks like. We don’t just keep these things in our kitchen. It was meant for something else—but I’ll shut up now.”
