Over the last few seasons, superstar outfielder Juan Soto has declined numerous contract extension offers ranging from $300 million to well over $400 million. He did all this with the hopes of one day reaching unrestricted free agency, where he could leverage his value to land a contract worth over half a billion dollars.
Now Soto is a free agent and the “Juan Soto sweepstakes” is taking over Major League Baseball.
Only a handful of teams could afford Soto at the rate that many experts project. Teams like the New York Yankees, New York Mets, Toronto Blue Jays, and Los Angeles Dodgers have all found themselves in the Soto rumors.
But who’s projected to land him? And for how much?
Bleacher Report’s Tim Kelly projects Soto to land a 14-year contract worth $658 million with an opt-out after 2030. Kelly predicts Soto to sign back with the Yankees.
“In his first season with the Yankees, he put up the finest campaign in a career that’s probably already headed to Cooperstown, hitting 41 home runs with 109 RBI, a .989 OPS and a career-high 8.1 WAR,” Kelly wrote. “Considering he also sent the Yankees to the World Series with an epic at-bat that culminated in a go-ahead home run against the Cleveland Guardians in Game 5 of the ALCS, it’s difficult to imagine the Yankees letting him out the door.”
Soto’s contract is very difficult to predict because it’s almost certainly not going to be a flat contract for a set salary over a set number of years like 95 percent of contracts.
Soto will have opt-outs, deferred money or anything else that front offices can imagine adding that could make their offer stand out. With Shohei Ohtani, it was deferred money that took the cake. Who knows what the caveat will be for Soto?
