At Least 7 Dead After School Shooting in Thailand

At least seven people were killed and more than a dozen others were injured after a student shot and killed his grandparents in their home before opening fire at his high school in Thailand on Friday, the local authorities said.

The shooting occurred in the morning at Debsirin Nonthaburi School, northwest of Bangkok, the capital, and ended when the shooter turned the gun on himself. The authorities initially gave conflicting information about the number of casualties, as well as the condition of the shooter.

Polapee Suwunchwee, the deputy interior minister, said in a television interview on Friday afternoon that there were six dead at the school — five teachers and the gunman. Earlier, officials had said victims included three students.

In a video of the shooting posted to social media, which The New York Times has verified, at least eight gunshots could be heard within the span of a minute, as students crouched under tables in a classroom. Some reports said that the shooter had fired 26 rounds.

The authorities said they found a handgun near the shooter, along with multiple rounds of ammunition.

“The gun was a compact small gun, registered as his grandfather’s,” Mr. Polapee said. “From the inspection at the house, it was found that the grandfather was a former government teacher and had a gun.”

Thailand, which has one of the highest rates of civilian gun ownership in Southeast Asia, has in recent years seen several deadly high-profile mass shootings, which have fueled calls for stricter firearm controls in the country.

In 2022, a former police officer fatally shot or stabbed more than 20 people — most of them children — at a day care center in Nong Bua Lamphu Province.

One year later, a 14-year-old shooter opened fire at one of Bangkok’s largest shopping malls, killing two and wounding five others.

Last year, a 61-year-old man opened fire at a marketplace in Bangkok, killing five and wounding two others.
