Mia Farrow didn’t have much notice before her wedding to Frank Sinatra. According to the actress, Sinatra suggested they marry only one day before they actually tied the knot.
Farrow — who was only 21 when she married an almost 50-year-old Sinatra back in 1966 — made the shocking confession on this morning’s episode of The Drew Barrymore Show.
“I only knew the day before when we were gonna get married so I had to wear whatever I had in my closet,” she revealed, referring to her wedding dress.
According to Farrow, they were engaged at the time — but Sinatra was in England finishing up a film he was starring in. Meanwhile, she was hauled up in a two-bedroom rental that left her little privacy from paparazzi.
“Press had surrounded my house, cameras against every window, and there were no drapes — there were no curtains,” she recalled. “So, I would crawl around and I would go to the refrigerator and I would open it from the floor, which isn’t easy, and try to get a pizza out or something to eat. And then [Sinatra] would call and I would pretend everything was just fine. But it was a freaky thing.”
When Sinatra caught wind of the mayhem, he suggested that they wed immediately.
“I guess he saw it on TV in England so he called and he said, ‘I think we should get married tomorrow.’ I was like, ‘Oh, OK,’” Farrow explained.
While they were only married for two years, they remained close friends until Sinatra’s death in 1998.
Farrow recently opened up about their relationship during a September interview with CBS Sunday Morning.
“He had a temper,” she said, but noted, “The essential person was so compassionate and shy and readily available more than anybody I’ve ever known. It ended up being a friendship that lasted until he died.”
The Drew Barrymore Show airs on weekdays on CBS. You can check the website for local airtimes.
