Sunny Hostin has come under fire for a controversial remark she made on this morning’s episode of The View about “uneducated white women.”
The longtime co-host said she was “profoundly disturbed” by Donald Trump‘s sweeping victory over Vice President Kamala Harris on Election Day, before further diving into the demographics of his voters.
“Black women tried to save this country again last night,” Hostin told Rick Klein, ABC News’ political director. “Ninety-two percent of Black women voted for the Vice President. You have Latinas in the 70 percentile voting for the Vice President.”
Hostin then turned her attention to the Trump voters, explaining, “What we did not have is white women, who voted about 52% for Donald Trump — uneducated white women, is my understanding. [And] you have Latino men actually voting more for him.”
The former prosecutor asked Klein why he thought “uneducated white women voted against their reproductive health freedoms” and why “Latino men voted in favor of someone that says he’s going to deport the majority of [their] community.”
However, Alyssa Farah Griffin quickly chimed in to tell Hostin that white women don’t like being labeled as “uneducated.”
“That’s what the poll said,” Hostin insisted, to which Griffin replied, “But when you put people in these boxes, I think that’s a takeaway from this race.”
Hostin was forced to walk back her comment in the following segment, telling Klein, “I want to correct something that I asked you before. I said uneducated white women. It’s non-college-educated white women, for the polls.”
Meanwhile, viewers flocked to X (formerly known as Twitter) to drag Hostin for her remark.
“Not just white women but uneducated white women. Sunny didn’t say that about the men she was talking about. Just the women. If anyone divides America it’s shows like #TheView,” one wrote, while another added, “The fact that they just said on The View that uneducated white women didn’t vote for the vice president makes me want to scream.”
A third person fumed, “Sunny Hostin saying uneducated white women voted for Trump is still the same divisive rhetoric this country doesn’t need.”
The View airs on weekdays at 11/10c on ABC.
