In a close but decisive race, former President Donald Trump has secured a second term in office, becoming only the second president in US history to win nonconsecutive terms (the first being Grover Cleveland).
The ticket is not entirely the same as it was eight years ago—Trump replaced former Vice President Mike Pence with Senator JD Vance, whose infamous “childless cat lady” jab at Kamala Harris and other powerful women became a rallying call of the left.
But now Vance’s comments represent a very real anxiety for anyone concerned with reproductive rights. During his first term Trump appointed the three Supreme Court justices who made it possible for the court to overturn Roe v. Wade. Since the monumental decision in 2022, certain states have enacted draconian abortion bans that have already resulted in multiple maternal fatalities. Though Trump said while campaigning that he would not sign a national abortion ban into law, Vance’s comments, especially those claiming that childless people have no “physical stake” in the future of the country, as well as the stated goals in Project 2025, indicate that reproductive freedom for women may be further curtailed in the next four years. Furthermore, the campaign has made no promises to protect the lives of people already living in states with abortion bans.
When Donald Trump—then a businessman and reality television star—won in 2016, many were shocked, as the majority of polls had predicted his opponent, career politician Hillary Clinton, with a high degree of certainty. In the days leading up to the 2024 election, however, prediction models had Trump and Harris in a toss-up.
Though most A-listers who endorsed a candidate chose Harris, Trump had the backing of former rival Robert F. Kennedy Jr. as well as a smattering of celebrities including Brittany Mahomes, wife of Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes.
