The recent penalties have drawn responses from drivers Bubba Wallace, Austin Dillon, and Ross Chastain. This follows a controversial moment at the Martinsville race where the teams associated with these drivers were penalized under the member code of conduct. The consequences were vast, involving not only fines but also suspensions affecting important team members for the decisive season finale at Phoenix Raceway.
The teams in question: Richard Childress Racing, 23XI Racing, and Trackhouse Racing were fined $100,000 each and docked 50 driver and owner points. To make matters worse, each team saw the suspension of their crew chief, spotter, and a team executive. Quickly following this news, these teams have now announced their intentions to appeal the decisions.
Richard Childress Racing and 23XI Racing made their cases public via social media platforms, whereas Trackhouse Racing’s announcement was reported by ESPN’s Kelly Crandall. The appeal process is pressed by time, given that the season finale is just this weekend, with hearings anticipated shortly preceding the race.
The controversy itself centers around the final laps at Martinsville, crucial to the competition for a spot in the Championship 4 between William Byron and Christopher Bell. Byron, holding a narrow lead by a single point over Bell, became the focus when the radio exchanges from Austin Dillon’s team attracted scrutiny.
Allegations surfaced suggesting that Dillon, alongside Chastain, both Chevrolet drivers, may have been blocking on the track to support Byron. Meanwhile, questions also emerged about Bubba Wallace allowing a surprisingly easy pass to Bell, his fellow Toyota driver, which Wallace attributed to an issue with a tire.
The culmination of this controversy took an unprecedented turn with Christopher Bell’s aggressive wall ride in the last corner, initially positioning him equivalently in the points to Byron. NASCAR, however, adjudged this daring move a safety violation, penalizing Bell by relegating him to 22nd place. This adjustment paved Byron’s way into the Championship 4.
To add to this drama, 23XI Racing finds itself involved in a legal dispute with NASCAR over the charter system, adding further complexity to this appeal.
As we look toward Phoenix Raceway and the Championship 4, this race will see the 2024 NASCAR Cup Series end after a dramatic year for the sport.
With the points change, Bubba Wallace will fall to 18th in the standings, Ross Chastain maintains his place in 19th, but Austin Dillon receives a huge drop from 28th to 33rd. This could be a very difficult time for these drivers and teams.
