Agatha All Along costume director Daniel Selon says he hopes to keep working with the character of Billy Maximoff (Joe Locke) after the Disney+ show’s recent end.
Sitting down with Decider to discuss his work on Agatha, Selon — who also designed costumes for Disney+’s WandaVision — said that when it comes to his bucket list within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), one character comes to mind.
“I feel this very paternal pride and joy about Billy Maximoff because I sort of, like, was there when he was born, quite literally, and have gotten to carry through the character,” Selon said.
It was in WandaVision that the audience was first introduced to Billy and Tommy, the twin sons of Wanda Maximoff (Elizabeth Olsen) and Vision (Paul Bettany). The boys were born in the Hex Wanda cast over Westview and disappeared as the Scarlet Witch brought down her spell. A testament to the true scope of Wanda’s powers, Billy and Tommy were literally conjured into the world via her reality-bending powers and thus dissipated as the Hex came down.
While fans were led to believe that Billy and Tommy no longer exist in the MCU following the events of WandaVision, Agatha All Along confirmed fan suspicions that Locke’s character, initially dubbed “Teen,” is really the reincarnated version of Wanda’s son. To read about how showrunner Jac Schaeffer and the other producers pulled that off, check out our story.
Given that he has been with the character (or at least some version of Billy Maximoff as Julian Hilliard played the child version of Billy) since the very beginning, Selon says he would be honored to keep working with Locke’s Marvel persona. That’s especially true as the character had a full-blown Wiccan superhero costume reveal in the Agatha All Along finale.
“I just want to stay with my boy, you know? I want to follow his progression because I think there’s some really wonderful spaces that he will get to express himself in the MCU,” the costume designer explained.
Selon — who won an Emmy Award alongside Mayes C. Rubeo for their work on WandaVision — continued, “And to get to continue to do that would be such a joy.”
As for what is actually ahead for the character, Selon says he is just as much in the dark as the rest of us, even as rumors fly online that Marvel is working on a Wiccan spinoff. No other details have come out but Selon said that he is on board for whatever is next for the character.
“I wait to read it in the trades,” Selon said. “But I’m patiently waiting by the phone.”
Just last week, one leaker who goes by “My Time To Shine Hello” tweeted out a rumor that a Billy Maximoff show is being workshopped alongside a potential Scarlet Witch solo film and a Young Avengers project. Marvel has yet to confirm any of the three projects.
It is worth noting, however, that Wednesday night’s Agatha All Along finale all but guaranteed another journey ahead for Billy. The show sadly saw the death of the titular character, Agatha Harkness (Kathryn Hahn), but showed Billy and a ghost version of Agatha uniting in the final moments and declaring their intention to find Tommy, wherever he may be.
Episode 8, “Follow Me Thy Friend/To Glory at the End,” also saw Billy telepathically locating Tommy — or the body that Tommy’s soul would enter — as he drowned somewhere in the world. The gist? Tommy is out there and they’re going to find him.
Well, we know Selon will be ready and waiting.
All episodes of Agatha All Along and WandaVision are currently streaming on Disney+.
