Joe Rogan took to his podcast to reveal that he warned Tony Hinchcliffe about the dangers of telling his Puerto Rico joke prior to Donald Trump‘s rally on Sunday, October 27.
Three days later on the Wednesday, October 30, episode of The Joe Rogan Experience, Rogan, 57, revealed that he told Hinchcliffe, 40, “Dude, that’s the one that’s gonna get you stabbed,” in reference to the comedian’s joke in which he referred to Puerto Rico as “a floating island of garbage.” Rogan told his followers, “I’ve gotta tell you, that joke kills at comedy clubs. I don’t like the joke, [but] it kills,” and later added, “it’s a funny joke. The joke does well.”
The host mentioned that Hinchcliffe would often tell the polarizing joke on stage and later tell his audience, “Joe Rogan always says that’s the one that’s gonna get me stabbed.”
In the episode, Rogan also talked about his views on comedy shows at political rallies, saying that they were “a bad environment” and that they are a “terrible setup.” He also stated that he implores all comedians to stay away from performing comedy at non-comedy events.
Rogan later admitted, “I didn’t know what bits he was going to do, but then I heard he did that joke, and I was like, ‘Oh, Jesus, Tony. Here it comes.’” He also told his listeners that if he knew Hinchcliffe was going to tell that joke at the rally, he would have told him, “Don’t you f****ng dare do that joke.”
When Rogan talked about what he thinks will happen as a result of the joke, he said, “I think it’ll blow over, just like all these things do. There are people that are always going to hate someone like Tony, and it’s going to make other people love him more. It’s just like, he’s going through it right now. He’s going through the storm,” adding that he thinks that Hinchcliffe will get through it all and come back even better.
Hinchcliffe is best known for hosting a live comedy podcast called Kill Tony which showcases amateur and professional comedians in Austin, Texas and airs on Monday nights.
