I think we can all agree that it has been way, way too long since we’ve had a really good teen rom-com. This is where Sweethearts, an upcoming written and directed by Jordan Weiss, comes in. It’s about two best friends and college freshmen, played by Kiernan Shipka and Nico Hiraga, who make a pact to break up with their respective high school sweethearts over Thanksgiving break, while seeming to grow even closer to each other at the same time. I think you can see where this is going…
So here is everything we know about Sweethearts so far.
What is the movie about?
“There are so many films— especially iconic high school movies— about people falling in love,” Weiss tells Glamour. “The grand gesture, the happy ending at prom. But what happens to most of those relationships when high school ends? I think falling out of love for the first time is as cardinal of an experience as falling into it is.”
Another universal college freshman experience? The partying that happens on Thanksgiving weekend, when everyone is back home for the first time. And that also plays a pivotal role in the movie.
Is there a trailer?
There sure is! The official trailer dropped on October 30, and shows Jamie (Shipka) and Ben (Hiraga) coming to regret staying with their high school significant others in college, with “Girls” by The Dare in the background. When they decide to break up with their partners over Thanksgiving break, chaos, hijinks, and repressed emotions ensue.
Glamour also has an exclusive clip from the movie, in which Jamie and Ben workshop their breakup speeches. Ben’s begins with a treatise on global warming, which doesn’t seem as effective as he thinks.
When does it premiere?
Mark your calendars for November 28, Thanksgiving day, which is when the movie is scheduled to drop.
Will it be in theaters?
The good news is that you won’t have to drag any of your family to the theater to watch Sweethearts, because it will be streaming on Max.
Who else is in the cast?
Sweethearts also stars comedian Caleb Heron as a hometown bestie, and Jake Bongiovi (AKA husband of Millie Bobby Brown) as Kellan.
