Two participants at a World Triathlon Championship Series event in Spain died on Thursday, the organizers said.
One athlete was from Mexico, and the other was from Britain, World Triathlon, the governing body for the sport, said in a statement on social media. The organization did not identify them or say how old they were.
“Our deepest condolences go to their respective family, friends, National Federations and all the triathlon family,” the statement read.
Organizers said the two athletes died at the age group sprint distance event, which was taking place in Torremolinos, Málaga in the southern region of Spain.
Organizers did not immediately respond to requests for comment on Thursday afternoon.
The event on Thursday began with a 75-meter swim off Los Alamos Beach, followed by a 20-kilometer bike ride through Torremolinos, and ended with a 5-kilometer run along the beach.
More than 5,500 athletes from around the world were expected to compete in the World Triathlon Championship Series event this week, organizers said before the event. On Thursday, 354 athletes were expected to represent Britain in the spring distance races, according to British Triathlon.
