With fall officially here and Halloween on its heels, many might turn to thrillers, horrors or suspenseful mystery films for spooky season. Luckily, several new films in such genres will be arriving on streaming services in October to set the mood before the holiday.

Max has several offerings for those in the mood for a scary story. Other films, some of which arrived in late September, like Inside Out 2 will provide comfort in the season of being cozy.

Inside Out 2 – Sept 25 – Disney+
Inside Out arrived on Disney+ at the end of September after breaking many box office records and making history for animated films. Its debut on the streamer has already matched these statistics, which were hinted from the release of the film’s trailer.
Killer Heat – Sept 26 – Prime Video
Starring Shailene Woodley, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Richard Madden, Killer Heat provides a thrilling murder mystery perfect for October and spooky season. The film, directed by Philippe Lacôte from a script by Matt Charman, Roberto Bentivegna and Jo Nesbø, the whodunnit is now streaming on Prime Video.
Wolfs – Apple TV+ Sept 27
Premiering at the 81st Venice Film Festival, Apple’s Wolfs will debut on the streamer Friday Sept. 27 after a limited theatrical release Sept. 20. The action flick stars George Clooney and Brad Pitt, two fixers for hire that cover up messy situations. They get called to clean up Amy Ryan’s mess, but have to work together when they normally operate as lone wolves. Austin Abrams, Poorna Jagannathan, Richard Kind and Zlatko Burić also star in the film from Jon Watts. The “fixer” film has already become the most-viewed film on the streamer in under a week since its streaming release.
Salem’s Lot – Oct 3 – Max
Salem’s Lot, directed by Gary Dauberman, is an adaptation of Stephen King’s classic 1975 vampire novel. The film stars Lewis Pullman as author Ben Mears who returns to his childhood home of Jerusalem’s Lot to spark inspiration for his next book, but he gets caught up in the plight of his hometown as a vampire lurks in the shadows and preys on inhabitants. The horror film, which also stars Alfre Woodard, Makenzie Leigh, Bill Camp, Spencer Treat Clark, Pilou Asbæk, and John Benjamin Hickey, arrives on Max Oct. 3.
Dìdi – Oct. 4 – Peacock
Sean Wang’s Dìdi follows 13-year-old Taiwanese American boy Chris Wang and his adventures to get better at skating, flirting and loving his mom in 2008 during the last month of summer before he starts high school.
The Menendez Brothers – Oct. 7 – Netflix
For those who can’t get enough of Ryan Murphy’s Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story on Netflix, a documentary providing more perspective on the Hollywood-centered murder case arrives on the streamer Oct. 7.
Caddo Lake – Oct 10
Another creepy thriller arriving on Max Oct. 10 is Caddo Lake, from producer M Night Shyamalan. The movie stars Dylan O’Brien and Eliza Scanlen as well as Diana Hopper, Caroline Falk, Sam Hennings, Eric Lange and Laura Ambrose. The story centers around the disappearance of an 8-year-old girl and the sinister circumstances.
Tuesday – Oct. 11 – Max
The Julia Louis Dreyfus-starring A24 film in which a mother and her teenage daughter (Lola Petticrew) must confront death in the form of a talking parrot provides an emotional watch this month. The debut of Daina Oniunas-Pusic arrives on Max October 11.
MaXXXine – Oct. 18 – Max
With perfect timing for what some might consider final girl fall, MaXXXine, the final film in Ti West’s trilogy that stars Mia Goth in the titular role, arrives on Max October 18. The film also stars Lily Collins, Halsey, Elizabeth Debicki, Giancarlo Esposito, Kevin Bacon, Bobby Cannavale, Michelle Monaghan and Moses Sumney.
Road Diary: Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band– Oct. 25 – Hulu
Ahead of Jeremy Allen White’s upcoming portrayal of the rockstar, a documentary capturing how the band’s live performances were created through rehearsals and other moments. Archival footage and reflections from Springsteen himself will add even more perspective to the film, out on Hulu Oct. 25.
