The wedding of Gina Schumacher, daughter of the legendary Formula 1 driver Michael Schumacher, took place under tight security and high levels of secrecy at the family’s luxurious villa in Majorca. The event, shrouded in speculation particularly regarding Michael Schumacher’s attendance, was a private affair carefully shielded from public view.
Gina Schumacher, 27, exchanged vows with her now-husband Iain Bethke on Saturday at Villa Yasmin, the family’s opulent residence purchased in 2017 for £27 million. To ensure privacy, guests’ phones were confiscated upon arrival, preventing unauthorized photographs inside the property.
According to German outlet BILD, it is “very likely” that Michael Schumacher himself attended the ceremony, marking a poignant and emotional moment for the family.
This speculation comes approximately eleven years after Schumacher’s devastating skiing accident in December 2013, which left him in a medically induced coma and required extensive subsequent recovery. Schumacher’s health has been closely guarded, with his current condition largely kept private as he resides in a £50 million mansion in Gland, Switzerland under constant care.
The wedding saw attendance from family members, including Michael’s brother Ralf Schumacher and his partner Etienne Bosquet-Cassagne, despite ongoing family disputes with Ralf’s ex-wife, Cora. The wedding ceremony, taking place at the picturesque Villa Yasmin and lasting around thirty minutes, began with Gina and Iain saying their vows at 4 PM. The day continued with a banquet featuring a live country music band performance, though specific guest numbers were not disclosed.
Gina and Iain’s relationship spans nearly seven years, going public at an awards ceremony in Munich in December 2017. The luxurious villa itself boasts two swimming pools, a helipad, a gym, and expansive gardens filled with palm trees.
In recent years, the Schumacher family has dealt with big challenges, enduring a blackmail plot last year wherein three men threatened to release unauthorized images of Schumacher taken after his accident. This alarming situation, orchestrated by a former security guard, involved demands for £12.5 million and undoubtedly accentuated the family’s resolve to protect Michael’s privacy.
Outside of the family, there are rare glimpses of the former driver’s condition. Close friend and former Ferrari team boss Jean Todt, said the following:
“Michael is here, so I don’t miss him.
“[But he] is simply not the Michael he used to be. He is different and is wonderfully guided by his wife and children who protect him.
“His life is different now and I have the privilege of sharing moments with him. That’s all there is to say.
“Unfortunately, fate struck him ten years ago. He is no longer the Michael we knew in Formula 1.
“[He is in the] best of hands… surrounded by people who love him.”
