‘Resigning?’ Tension mounts as accused MAGA candidate teases ‘special announcement’

GOP lawmaker caves after backlash to horrifying allegations reaches fever pitch

Rep. Max Miller (R-OH), who’s been accused by his ex-wife in court filings of violent abuse, announced Saturday evening that he would make a “special announcement” on X Sunday morning, prompting countless onlookers to speculate he was about to resign.

Recent reports have unearthed disturbing accusations leveled against Miller, including allegations that he physically abused his ex-wife, Emily Moreno, the daughter of Sen. Bernie Moreno (R-OH).

Court records include allegations that Miller beat his ex-wife, held a gun to her head, threw boiling water on her and physically abused their 2-year-old daughter, potentially breaking her collarbone. Miller has previously denied any wrongdoing.

The accusations surfaced as Miller runs for reelection and spurred fears among Republicans that his campaign could lose them the House.

Republicans have until Aug. 5 to replace Miller — if they opt to do so, Politico reported Saturday.

Miller’s announcement, made on X, sparked both speculation about a potential resignation and outright calls for him to step down.

“Resigning?” asked journalist and commentator Molly Jong-Fast.

Brandon Wolf, a civil rights advocate and survivor of the 2016 Pulse nightclub shooting in Florida wrote to Miller: “Better be your resignation.” Journalist Wajahat Ali also urged Miller to resign, accusing him of being a “wife beater and child abuser.” Democratic strategist Ally Sammarco also joined in on the calls for Miller to step down.

“Resign, you freak,” Sammarco wrote. “I’m not going to stop talking about this until you’re gone, so might as well save yourself some embarrassment.”

Critics have noted the public silence of Sen. Moreno regarding his daughter’s alleged abuser, with the Republican senator refusing to say whether he believes Miller should be ousted from office. Citing alleged text messages referenced in court filings, Mother Jones reported earlier this month that Miller had “implicitly threatened” his ex-father-in-law.

“Take this however you want, everyone is going to get to know you better than your wife does,” Miller allegedly wrote to Moreno, according to Mother Jones. “Enjoy the ride brother, I wouldn’t have to do this if you could keep your lying daughter under control.”

That allegation, combined with reporting that someone with access to Sen. Moreno’s email created an account on a “casual sexual encounters website” seeking “Men for 1-on-1 sex,” has led some – including Sammarco – to theorize that Miller “has some dirt” on his ex-father-in-law and is using that leverage to keep him quiet.
