The suspect in an assassination attempt on Donald Trump kept a handwritten list of dates and locations of the former president’s movements and staked out his Florida home and golf course, prosecutors said.
The suspect’s phone pinged towers near Trump’s golf course and his Florida home repeatedly from August 18 to September 15, according to a court filing on Monday.
Prosecutors say they found a handwritten list of dates and locations where Trump was expected to be, the filing said.
Ryan Wesley Routh wrote a note months earlier saying that he intended to kill the former president, the Justice Department said on Monday, arguing that he should remain in custody.
The note was placed in a box that was dropped at the home of an unidentified person who contacted law enforcement officials after Mr Routh was arrested.
The box, which also contained ammunition, a metal pipe and other items along with a note which read: “This was an assassination attempt on Donald Trump but I failed you. I tried my best and gave it all the gumption I could muster. It is up to you now to finish the job; and I will offer $150,000 to whomever can complete the job.”
The box was not opened by the person until after Mr Routh was taken into custody. The person who received the box and contacted law enforcement was not identified in the Justice Department’s detention memo Monday.
An attorney for Mr Routh did not immediately respond to an email seeking comment Monday morning.
