To mark National Voter Registration Day on Tuesday, staffers at Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s Archewell Foundation got together for a nonpartisan letter-writing campaign to urge people across the country to exercise their right to vote. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex didn’t participate in this week’s activity, Vanity Fair can report, and the nonpartisan internal event was optional for all staff. The couple has no plans to endorse a candidate currently, according to a source, but they support their staff’s efforts to advocate for voter registration.
Staffers at the foundation, which launched in October 2020, shared photographs to their website, along with a link to instructions for others to participate in a program organized by Vote Forward. “Voting is not just a right; it’s a fundamental way to influence the fate of our communities,” the organization shared in a statement. “At The Archewell Foundation, we recognize that civic engagement, no matter one’s political party, is at the heart of a more just and equitable world.”
In 2020, Meghan and Harry did not endorse a candidate. But before the November election, Meghan and Harry participated in a televised special for National Voter Registration Day, where they discussed the importance of voting. “Every four years, we’re told, ‘This is the most important election of our lifetime.’ But this one is,” Meghan said. “When we vote our values are put into action, and our voices are heard.”
Harry also discussed his work to combat online misinformation and caused controversy when he addressed the historic convention that members of the royal family are asked not to vote in elections. “This election, I’m not able to vote in the US,” he said. “But many of you may not have known that I’ve never been able to vote in the UK my entire life.” He would become eligible to vote if he secured US citizenship but in a February 2024 interview with ABC, he said he wasn’t currently interested in applying.
