Carolina Panthers head coach Dave Canales announced Monday that the team is benching quarterback Bryce Young following a disastrous start to his career since the Panthers made him the No. 1 overall pick out of Alabama in the 2023 NFL Draft. Tom Pelissero of NFL Network first reported the news.

The Panthers will now start veteran Andy Dalton at quarterback, as they try to turn their season around from an 0-2 start.
The decision came one day after Canales said that the team planned to stick it out with Young at quarterback.
“Bryce is our quarterback,” Canales said Sunday after their loss to the Los Angeles Chargers, via David Newton of ESPN. “We’re going to continue to shore and fix the things we need to fundamentally, from a scheme standpoint, all those things.”
The Panthers are benching the quarterback over a year and a half after they traded numerous valuable assets to draft him first overall. Carolina sent wide receiver D.J. Moore, two first-round picks, two second-round picks, and a fourth-round pick to the Chicago Bears in exchange for the No. 1 overall pick.
The Bears have converted those picks into offensive lineman Darnell Wright, cornerback Tyrique Stevenson, quarterback Caleb Williams, and punter Tory Taylor. They also have a second-round pick in the 2025 NFL Draft.
Trading these picks to select a quarterback was not necessarily the wrong move, but the Panthers’ pick of Young pales in comparison to the Houston Texans drafting C.J. Stroud just one pick later.
The No. 2 pick in the 2023 NFL Draft put together one of the best seasons by a rookie quarterback in NFL history, and led a team that many believed was the worst in the league to the divisional round of the playoffs while winning the Offensive Rookie of the Year award.
