Secret Service agents opened fire near former president Donald Trump’s golf club in West Palm Beach, Florida, after seeing a person with a firearm on Sunday afternoon, according to reporting from AP based on two law enforcement officials. The FBI is saying that Trump was subject of “what appears to be an attempted assassination.” The Republican presidential candidate is safe.
“There were gunshots in my vicinity,” Trump said in an email alert sent Sunday afternoon. “But before rumors start spiraling out of control, I wanted you to hear this first: I AM SAFE AND WELL! Nothing will slow me down. I will NEVER SURRENDER!”
The suspect fled in an SUV and was later apprehended by local law enforcement about a 45-mile drive north of Trump’s golf course, according to AP. “An AK-style firearm was recovered at the scene near Trump’s golf course, one of the officials and a third law enforcement official said.”
“President Trump is safe following gunshots in his vicinity. No further details at this time,” Trump campaign spokesman Steven Cheung said in a statement.
The White House said President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris had both been briefed on the situation and would be kept updated on the investigation, adding “They are relieved to know that he is safe.”
Sunday’s events took place two months after the failed assassination attempt on Trump at a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. Trump’s security details have been bulked up since then.
