“I know that it can be done and I want to do it,” Williams said.
Williams and the 49ers finalized a restructured three-year, $82.66 million deal on Sept. 3. The news came just days before ahead of San Francisco’s Week 1 matchup with the New York Jets.
San Francisco was able to secure their blindside protector for the Monday Night Football showdown.
In spite of an ongoing contract saga, the left tackle experience a moment of shock as he was able to join his team for the first game of the 2024 season.
“I did have a waking up moment, just like dang it is here,” Williams said. “A couple weeks ago, I couldn’t see this forming together this quick and it came by surprise.”
The 36-year-old was absent from all of training camp as he waited for a new deal. It was evident on Monday Night Football when he had to exit the game to get an IV in the fourth quarter.
“There’s no way you can get in football shape without playing football,” Williams said. Not having that acclimation period, not having camp to kind of measure yourself. That’s when you realize who you’re going to be for that year, it’s in camp. It was completely different. Luckily we had some IV’s.”
Williams wasn’t the only holdout in this camp. Wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk was also absent from training camp as he negotiated a new contract with the 49ers.
Both contract negotiations lasted until the eleventh hour, but there was no denying both Williams and Aiyuk wanted to stay with the San Francisco organization long-term.
“I’m also super blessed to be playing with one of the best coaches I’ve ever been around,” Williams added. “I turned down money to come here and to come and try to prove myself. Being with Kyle and this organization, I knew it would bring the best out of me.”
Williams was ranked as the best blocking tackle in the NFL as he posted a 95.8 percent pass block win rate last season.
Behind Williams, the 49ers averaged 6.05 yards per carry when rushing to the left side. In all other rushing attempts, they averaged 4.45 yards per carry.
