JD Vance has told Kamala Harris to “go to hell” in his latest personal attack on the Democratic presidential nominee.
Speaking at a Pennsylvania rally on Wednesday, Mr Vance, the running mate of Donald Trump, branded Ms Harris “disgraceful” and “asleep at the wheel” over the US withdrawal from Afghanistan.
Mr Vance had been asked about an “altercation” which reportedly took place at Arlington National Cemetery earlier this week between Trump’s campaign staff and cemetery officials during a wreath-laying cemetery for 13 US troops killed by a suicide bomber at Kabul airport during the evacuation in 2021.
Trump team ‘abused and pushed’ cemetery official
US law prohibits campaign-related activities at military cemeteries, but official sources said Trump’s team “verbally abused and pushed” a cemetery official who attempted to stop them filming.
Mr Vance sought to defend Trump’s controversial appearance, turning the focus on to Ms Harris, who he blamed as vice-president for the deaths of the servicemen.
“Kamala Harris is so asleep at the wheel that she won’t even do an investigation into what happened. And she wants to yell at Donald Trump because he showed up? She can – she can go to hell,” he told his audience, who roared in applause.
It marks his harshest language yet directed towards Ms Harris on the campaign trail and follows a growing trend of inflammatory, often problematic, rhetoric that goes against advice from senior Republicans to focus on her policies and not personal attacks.
The Trump-Vance campaign is still dealing with the backlash of Mr Vance’s “childless cat lady” remark, and he is under renewed scrutiny for resurfaced comments that he made about female teachers.
On Wednesday, Ms Harris’s campaign released 2021 audio of Mr Vance telling a Christian leadership forum that the idea of childless women in teaching “really disorients and disturbs me”.
He singled out Randi Weingarten, the head of the American Federation of Teachers, saying she “doesn’t have a single child”.
“If she wants to brainwash and destroy the minds of children, she should have some of her own and leave ours the hell alone,” the senator continued.
The American Federation of Teachers officially endorsed Ms Harris’s presidential bid last month.
