One dedicated Final Fantasy 7 fan recently snagged a unique Lego sculpture, purchasing the diorama for $12,5000 at auction. The Lego scene, a recreation of the iconic Sector 5 slums moment between Cloud and Aerith, was one of two created for a Square Enix social media giveaway in 2023. In it, Cloud and Aerith stand in the deserted church where Aerith has grown a lush field of flowers. The sculpture was made by Square Enix then given away as a prize; Lego wasn’t involved.
One of these sets ended up on Heritage Auctions, as spotted by Kotaku, offering up the exceptionally rare Lego set to those with money to spend. The auction ended on Aug. 23, where it sold for $12,500, a number reached in 23 bids. Square Enix estimated the sculpture was worth a retail price of $150 at the time of the giveaway.
Here’s how Heritage Auctions described the item:
Here’s a rarity you may never have the chance to bid on again. After an intense fan vote, the fateful encounter between Final Fantasy VII characters Cloud Strife and Aerith Gainsborough in the Sector 5 slums was chosen to be recreated into a LEGO model. This exclusive set, created as a tie-in with Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, was given away to a single lucky fan. Only two of these sets were produced. Measuring 41.5″ tall, 29″ wide, and 20″ deep, this massive, highly detailed diorama features Cloud and Aerith within the ruined sanctuary, complete with stained glass windows, gothic columns, broken pews, a hole in the roof, and scattered flower petals on the floor. The roof structure showcases elaborate rafters, adding to the depth of the scene. Focused primarily on the church’s interior, this set beautifully captures a core moment in the storyline, making it a must-have collectible and display item for fans of the game and LEGO builders alike. It is complete and in excellent condition.
Final Fantasy fans were able to vote ahead of the giveaway to choose which scene would get recreated in Lego: the Sector 5 slums church, Aerith’s house, Cloud and Tifa sitting on the Nibelheim water tower, or the Honeybee Inn. Of course, it was the Sector 5 scene that won. To enter, all you had to do was follow the Final Fantasy 7 X, formerly Twitter, account, then like and retweet a certain post.
“After an intense fan vote, the fateful encounter between Final Fantasy VII characters Cloud Strife and Aerith Gainsborough in the Sector 5 slums was chosen to be recreated into a LEGO model,” Heritage Auctions video game managing director Valerie Spiegel said in a news release. “This exclusive set, created as a tie-in with Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, was given away to a single lucky fan.”
The rare Lego scene was part of Heritage Auctions’ Video Games Signature sale, which ran from Aug. 23 to Aug. 24. A whole bunch of sealed games were on offer, including a copy of The Legend of Zelda graded at a 9.2, which sold for $375,000. A Nintendo World Championships trophy, won in 1990, went for $5,000. And a Nintendo PlayStation SNES prototype controller from Nintendo’s failed collaboration with Sony sold for $35,000. Those were just a few of the items on auction, which certainly pleased a lot of collectors.
