EXCLUSIVE: After breaking out stateside with his role in A24’s romantic drama Past Lives, Teo Yoo has been tapped for the lead role in Karoshi, an action thriller written and to be directed by Takashi Doscher.
The film’s plot is being kept under wraps, but it’s described as a corporate thriller with a samurai twist. 87Eleven Entertainment‘s Chad Stahelski, Alex Young, and Jason Spitz will produce as one of the first projects through their first-look production deal with Lionsgate. The filmmakers are out now to actors for the other lead roles.
Yoo garnered a BAFTA nomination for his turn opposite Greta Lee and John Magaro in Celine Song’s Past Lives, a Sundance success story which went on to Oscar nominations for Best Picture and Best Original Screenplay. Other past credits for the rising star include the Palme d’Or-nominated Russian film Leto, Park Chan-Wook’s acclaimed mystery Decision to Leave, and Netflix Korea’s original romantic comedy series Love to Hate You. Next up, he’ll be seen starring in the second season of Netflix’s spy thriller series, The Recruit.

Most recently, Doscher wrote and directed Only, a grounded sci-fi pic starring Freida Pinto and Leslie Odom Jr., which premiered at the Tribeca Festival. No stranger to 87Eleven, he previously wrote an adaptation of the hit PlayStation game Ghost of Tsushima for Stahelski to direct. Currently, he’s scripting an adaptation of the graphic novel Project Nemesis for 87Eleven, Sony Television and Peacock.
