Not everyone is on board with the entertainment industry’s pivot to streaming. In a recent video interview with the Wall Street Journal Magazine, Aubrey Plaza revealed that she still hasn’t seen her Emmy-nominated turn in season two of HBO’s The White Lotus for a very relatable reason: “I had trouble opening my HBO Max account.”

It’s been almost a year since Plaza stole scenes as Harper, an uptight lawyer on an awkward couples trip in Taormina, on season two of Mike White‘s anthology series. Although she claims that she intends to watch her season one of these days, Plaza says that she hasn’t had a chance to see her own performance due to technical difficulties. “To be honest, I had trouble opening my HBO Max account when I was trying to watch it originally,” said Plaza. “I couldn’t figure out the password and I usually just give up when I can’t figure out the passwords. I just can’t handle things like that.”
This is not the first time Plaza has railed against the password industrial complex. In her June 2023 Vanity Fair cover story, Plaza shared that she was forced to stop bingeing Bravo due to password issues. “I was trying to watch Top Chef Season 20. Couldn’t figure out how to fucking get Hulu + Live. I give up! I can’t. I just can’t,” she said. “And so what I like to do is go on iTunes and buy movies that are old. Or I’ll go on iTunes and just, like, buy the whole Sopranos series, and then my husband will be like, ‘You literally can watch that for free on HBO Max.’”
But are pesky passwords the only reason Plaza hasn’t seen The White Lotus? Last year, Plaza participated in VF’s Scene Selection video series and revealed that she’s not the type of actor who typically watches herself. “I wasn’t planning to until 10 years from now,” she said. “Unless I’m producing something, I’ll watch it 100 million times. But if I’m just acting in something I generally don’t watch it.”
Whatever the reason, Plaza has a simple solution that would solve her Max problem. “I’d love a DVD, but they don’t send DVD sets anymore” Plaza said. “I ask them every time.” Until studios bring back physical media, someone should volunteer to keep Plaza’s passwords in a secure but accessible place so that she can binge shows like the rest of us.
