New York Jets linebacker Haason Reddick requested a trade from the team on Tuesday. The request was unusual as Reddick had only arrived from the Jets four months ago when the Philadelphia Eagles traded him to New York in April. He has yet to play for the Jets.
Reddick has been holding out of camp as he has been seeking a new contract. The 29-year-old has incurred a $50,000 fine for every day he has missed camp, and is now up to $1.1 million in fines.
Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers offered his take on Reddick’s trade request, saying that he would ‘love’ to have Reddick on the team.
“I don’t know him well,” Rodgers said, via ESPN’s Rich Cimini. “I had a couple messages with him, I believe, when he got traded. Obviously, we’d love him to be here, but we don’t judge him for trying to do what’s best for him. I think what’s best for him is to be a Jet because this is going to be a fun ride. But he’s got to make the best decision for him and his family.”
The Jets have no plans to trade Reddick, which general manager Joe Douglas made clear Monday saying, “We have informed Haason that we will not trade him, that he is expected to be here with his teammates, and that he will continue to be fined per the CBA if he does not report. Since the trade discussions back in March we have been clear, direct, and consistent with our position. Our focus will remain on the guys we have here as we prepare for the regular season.”
Reddick last signed a three-year, $45 million contract with the Eagles in March 2022, but that was before he had his “breakout” year in 2022. Reddick feels that his recent play has warranted a bigger deal.
During that 2022 season, Reddick’s first with the Eagles, he recorded a career-high 16 sacks and led the NFL with five forced fumbles as he helped the Eagles reach the Super Bowl. He followed that season up by recording 11 sacks and 13 tackles for loss in 2023. He has now recorded double-digit sacks and tackles for loss in four consecutive seasons.
Before his tenure with the Eagles, Reddick played for the Arizona Cardinals and Carolina Panthers. The Cardinals’ first-round pick out of Temple in the 2017 NFL Draft, Reddick did not shine until his fourth NFL season, after the Cardinals had already declined his fifth-year option. Due to a slow career start, Reddick signed contracts that he now feels he has outperformed.
