Trump admin targets TPS for Haitians — threatening to upend healthcare industry

President Donald Trump is using a Supreme Court decision in Mullin v. Doe to terminate Temporary Protected Status, or TPS, for approximately 348,000 Haitians, effective Monday.

According to CBS, the ruling bars federal judges from reviewing presidential TPS decisions, eliminating judicial oversight.

The termination threatens healthcare infrastructure nationwide, as the affected population includes 13,000 nursing assistants and 8,000 caregivers who provide critical services in nursing homes and long-term care facilities, found Princeton University research fellow Phillip Connor.

Peer-reviewed research by The Gerontologist warns staffing shortages in these settings create “dire consequences for residents” and increase risks of neglect, infection, and rehospitalization.

Certified nursing assistants provide up to 90% of direct resident care.

LeadingAge, representing nursing home providers, warns facilities may close units or turn away new residents due to vacancies, Axios reported.

The Haitian Bridge Alliance executive director describes the community as experiencing “extreme trauma, fear and terror,” with families fearing separation. Yet Abigail Jackson, a White House spokesperson, told Fox News it was a “tremendous win,” adding TPS “was never intended to be a pathway to permanent status.”

The Department of Homeland Security offers departing Haitians $2,600 and airfare home.
