The Minnesota Vikings hosted All-Pro cornerback Stephon Gilmore on Monday. The star free agent visited the Vikings at their facility, but no news on a potential deal has been revealed. Aaron Wilson, who covers the NFL and the Houston Texans, shared the news via Twitter/X.
Gilmore is a two-time All-Pro and is coming off a solid and healthy season with the Dallas Cowboys. In 17 games, he collected 60 total tackles, two interceptions, 13 passes defended, and one forced fumble with a PFF grade of 74.4.
The 33-year-old believes he is still at the top of his game, and ESPN’s Adam Schefter said he visited with the Vikings for a reason. Schefter appeared on the Pat McAfee show and said he is the type of player that Minnesota desperately needs.
“I don’t think Stephon Gilmore is taking a visit to waste his time and the Vikings could use a player like him… The Vikings have been looking for help at the corner position all along.”
Since making a name for himself with the Buffalo Bills and New England Patriots, Gilmore has bounced from team to team over the last three seasons. If the Vikings were to pull the trigger on Gilmore, it would be his fourth team in the last four seasons.
For someone with a resume like Gilmore’s, it’s odd that he is still a free agent with less than a month from the start of the 2024 regular season. It’s a shock to many, including Gilmore, who had this to say about his free agency in July.
“There are still some good corners and safeties out there like Justin Simmons and myself that are still not signed. Honestly, I’m still being patient and staying ready until teams see what they have in training camp; but you mean to tell me among 32 teams that there are 64 starting corners that are better than me? I don’t think that. If teams want to win, I think they should sign the best players. I know I’m still a starter in this league. I started games last year, but the season doesn’t start until September, we got a while.”
His resume speaks for itself. Gilmore is a five-time Pro Bowler, two-time All-Pro, a Super Bowl champion, and the 2019 AP Defensive Player of the Year. Gilmore will turn 34 next month and would be a significant help to the Vikings’ struggling secondary, who ranked 14th in opponent yards per pass and 24th in opponent pass yards per game last season.
