GOP insiders increasingly frustrated as Trump PAC leaves candidates out to dry

Republican candidates heading into the midterms are being given something they haven’t had in a decade – permission to keep their distance from Donald Trump.

But that new freedom is being overshadowed by a more pressing frustration that the president’s $400 million super PAC still hasn’t spent a dime on their races, and they’re growing impatient to learn MAGA Inc.’s intentions, reported MS NOW.

“That’s the $400 million question – I don’t know,” said an operative working on the party’s midterm races. “They have indicated they’re going to spend. But not where or when, and those are kind of big details.”

With 99 days until Election Day and Trump underwater on the economy and his handling of the Iran war, party insiders say his political operation has quietly eased off demanding loyalty from vulnerable candidates. One Republican operative working on midterm races described an unspoken understanding that candidates won’t be expected to defend Trump’s economic messaging or war strategy, since polling shows most voters already disagree with him on both fronts.

“There is less paranoia and more autonomy,” said a GOP strategist in Michigan. “[Trump] is still doing the work for the incumbents, but giving them space without lashing out.”

That looser approach is playing out in visible ways. Rep. Tom Barrett (R-MI), who voted twice to limit Trump’s war powers over Iran, is still set to appear alongside the president at a rally in his district. Michigan Senate candidate Mike Rogers has broken with Trump on Chinese EV manufacturing. In Maine, Sen. Susan Collins backed a Senate war-powers resolution and has pressed the Pentagon on its Iran funding request — all without triggering the retaliation such moves might once have invited.

Strategists say Trump’s inner circle has grown more selective about which deviations are worth confronting, particularly in states where a more loyal alternative isn’t realistically available. The result, several operatives said, is a party quietly encouraged to localize races and lean on popular provisions of last year’s tax-and-spending law rather than echo the president’s shifting rhetoric on Iran.

But that strategic patience hasn’t extended to the money. Despite amassing a $400 million war chest, Trump’s aligned super PAC, MAGA Inc., has yet to spend on a single House or Senate race. Operatives say spending is expected to ramp up in August across competitive races, but the delay has left some Republicans anxious.

The uncertainty comes as top Trump allies and campaign officials, in a recent strategy meeting with Cabinet members, deliberately steered discussion away from Iran and toward sharpening contrasts with Democratic opponents.
