Fights continue to be rampant in training camps for NFL teams, and Wednesday’s practice with the Seattle Seahawks got violently chippy. It’s an unfortunate, normal occurrence for teams to get involved in scrums during practice, but the Seahawks took things much farther when a helmet was swung.

During a segment for NFL Network, the hosts were sitting and chatting about Seahawks training camp, when a massive brawl broke out behind them. What is barely shown is a moment when wide receiver DK Metcalf swung a helmet at cornerback Tre Brown.
Multiple reports indicated that Metcalf took Brown’s helmet and swung it.
And now a serious scuffle between Brown and Metcalf. Metcalf grabbed Brown’s helmet and threw it at him. Macdonald now calling team together for a quick lecture. Now practice has resumed.

The Metcalf and Brown incident wasn’t the first of the fights, nor was it the last.
According to a report from ESPN, the fight occurred initially when wider receiver Jake Bobo and Brown got into a fist fight. This led to Bobo’s helmet being pried off, and him catching a punch to his nose. The punch led to Bobo bleeding.
Moments later, a hard hit on running back Ken Walker III from linebacker Tyrel Dodson led to a fight between Dodson and tight end Pharaoh Brown.
The Metcalf and Brown fight was the third of the day, resulting in Coach Mike Macdonald halting the music and practice to speak to his players about the constant fighting. Even after getting lectured, more fights would occur.
Edge rusher Derick Hall and Christian guard Christian Haynes were the worst of them, as both players were ejected after engaging in their own fight.
Macdonald spoke to NFL Network after the ensuing chaos of the day.
“We’ve been getting after it,” Macdonald said afterward while appearing on the NFL Network. “I’m proud of how we responded today. We came out and we were ready to practice. I don’t know what the numbers are, but we’ve been out here, I don’t know, 14 of the past 16 days. I think we’re tired of going against one another, but the guys are spirited. We had a great practice and we’re excited for Saturday.”
What is odd is that Macdonald stated he was proud of how the team responded. It’s unclear if he is proud of the fights, or how the team stopped fighting…eventually.

Training camp fights are an unnecessary risk that players place themselves in. Though Metcalf did not cause any damage with his helmet swing, things could have gone worse.
The Seahawks are set to take on the Los Angeles Chargers on Saturday in their first preseason game of 2024. Hopefully, no fights occur then.
