Three years later, Squid Game‘s got the green light. The South Korean dystopian drama series, which revolves around a deadly contest in which 456 players risk their lives playing deadly children’s games for a massive cash prize, will return to Netflix for its second season on December 26, 2024. The third and final season of Squid Game will follow in 2025.
Netflix announced the return of the global phenomenon with an Olympics-inspired trailer. The clip features athletes lined up on a track, getting ready to race. Once the race begins, Squid Game contestants decked out in their classic green jump suits begin appearing, then dropping like flies on the track. The camera then pans to the Front Man and his masked, red-jumpsuit-wearing associates, who are watching the chaos as it unfolds. “It’s been three years,” says the Front Man. “Do you want to play again?”
According to Netflix, the third season of Squid Game picks up three years after the events of season one, when Lee Jung-jae’s Gi-hun unwittingly wins the game and then decides to devote himself to ending the competition once and for all. “Player 456 remains determined to find the people behind the game and put an end to their vicious sport,” reads the logline. “Using this fortune to fund his search, Gi-hun starts with the most obvious of places: look for the man in a sharp suit playing ddakji in the subway. But when his efforts finally yield results, the path toward taking down the organization proves to be deadlier than he imagined: to end the game, he needs to re-enter it.”
Season two will be helmed by Emmy-winning director Hwang Dong-hyuk, who made history in 2022 when he became the first Asian filmmaker to win outstanding directing for a drama series for season one of Squid Game. Lee, who won the leading actor in a drama series Emmy in 2022, will reprise his role, alongside fellow season one characters Front Man (Lee Byung-hun), Hwang Jun-ho (Wi Ha-jun), and the Recruiter (Gong Yoo).
They’ll be joined by a new cast of characters played by actors including Yim Si-wan, Kang Ha-neul, Park Gyu-young, Lee Jin-uk, Park Sung-hoon, Yang Dong-geun, Kang Ae-sim, Lee David, Choi Seung-hyun, Roh Jae-won, Jo Yu-ri, and Won Ji-an. As of now, it’s unclear whether Golden Globe winner O Yeong-su and SAG award winner HoYeon will appear in any capacity in the rest of the series.
In an open letter, writer and director Hwang expressed his excitement to return to the world of Squid Game and teased that the “fierce clash” between Gi-Hun and Front Man would last until the series ends in 2025. “Seong Gi-hun who vowed revenge at the end of season one, returns and joins the game again,” wrote Hwang. “Will he succeed in getting revenge? Front Man doesn’t seem to be an easy opponent this time either.”
“The real game begins,” reads the end of the trailer. “Squid Game Season 2 is coming December 26. The Final Season coming 2025.”
