Sony Pictures Television has struck a multi-year, co-development deal with Anxo Rodríguez’s Espotlight.
The first-look deal will see SPT co-developing and co-producing productions with the Spanish production house and comes after Sony launched its first Spanish-language scripted series filmed in Spain, football drama La Academia, which was for Prime Video and Catalan pubcaster 3Cat, earlier this year.
Espotlightis behind the likes of Prime Video’s The Farad, Atresplayer’s Un Nuevo Amanecer and Disney+’s You Would Do it Too.
“This deal underscores SPT’s intent to be in business locally in Spain and work with the best local players,” said Matthew Justice, EVP, Head of UK and Europe, SPT. “Anxo and the wider Espotlight team are proving that they have an incredible eye for content, working with some of Spain’s top creators, delivering amazing shows, and we are thrilled to join forces in order to produce great shows together for local and international audiences.”
Rodríguez launched Espotlight in 2020 and is currently working on Prime Video horror series Dime tu Nombre. He also owns talent agency Alter Ego Talent House, which provides access to Spain-based writers, directors, actors and composers.
His background is in production, law and business affairs specialized in the entertainment industry. He won a Goya Award for documentary Paco de Lucia: La Búsqueda, which he produced and executive produced, and worked as head of legal and business affairs for Netflix hit La Casa de Papel, HBO show Foodie Love and Movistar’s Mira lo que has Hecho.
“We are thrilled to get in business with Sony Pictures Television, this alliance will strengthen our ability to reach new clients and new audiences, SPT is showing a great ambition in the Spanish territory with a strategy very aligned to ours,” said Rodríguez. “Under this relationship we will be able to amplify the business strategies of our shows, exploit our ability to package great talent for the upcoming projects and build a stronger machinery for physical production.”
Marisa Simón-Moore, Director, Scripted Development for Spain at SPT, added: “Spanish content is travelling far and wide, not just because of the huge number of Spanish speakers worldwide, but because Spain is delivering top notch shows that appeal to global audiences, beyond the language scope. We are delighted to establish a working relationship with Espotlight, whose recent track record is very impressive for a relatively young production company, working with top talent in Spain on shows that resonate both locally and globally.”
SPT’s first-look deal with Espotlight comes after the studio struck a talent deal with Alvaro Morte’s 300 Pistolas last year. It also closely follows a deal with City Football Group, the company that owns Manchester City FC, to create programs together.
