Former President Donald Trump‘s estranged niece Mary Trump says that her uncle is “panicking” over Vice President Kamala Harris likely replacing President Joe Biden at the top of the Democratic presidential ticket.
Harris on Sunday was endorsed by the president shortly after he announced he was withdrawing his candidacy in this year’s election. Biden explained during a televised address on Wednesday that he made the decision to “pass the torch to a new generation” with the hope of “saving democracy” from Trump.
The former president, whose campaign had seemingly been laser-focused on Biden until Sunday, has since gone on to launch a series of attacks against the vice president, assailing Harris during a rally in North Carolina on Wednesday after referring to her in social media posts as “Laffin’ Kamala” or “Lyin’ Kamala.”
In a post to her Substack blog The Good in Us on Wednesday, Mary Trump suggested that her uncle’s attacks on Harris are fueled by “racism, sexism and … jealousy.” She also said that the former president was “panicking” because he can no longer claim that his likely opponent is too old or cognitively unfit to serve.
“My uncle is panicking,” Mary Trump wrote. “He’s running against a strong Black woman—and a former prosecutor—who isn’t afraid to call him out or mock him. His whole campaign strategy was based around attacking Joe Biden—his age, his infirmity, his cognitive decline. It was all projection, of course …”
“Now that he’s up against a much younger candidate with a history of prosecuting criminals like him, he’s painted himself into a corner,” she continued. “How do you escape from your own narrative about how bad it would be for the oldest candidate in the history of this country to win the election if that candidate is now you?”
While age and possibly related verbal slips during public speaking events had been a major concern for Democrats before Biden dropped out, there have been some suggestions that the same issue may now be a liability for the Trump campaign.
A poll released this week by Reuters/Ipsos found that 53 percent of voters agreed that the former president “is too old to work in government.”
Newsweek reached out for comment to the Trump campaign via email on Wednesday night.
Mary Trump went on to argue that “Republicans are a party of racists and misogynists,” while predicting that Donald Trump would soon launch a barrage of “dirty” attacks on Harris.
She concluded her post by claiming that her uncle’s “panic” extended to fears about debating Harris and regrets about choosing Senator JD Vance as the Republican vice presidential nominee.
“Donald is so panicked that he’s already floated the possibility that he’s going to skip the next debate,” Mary Trump wrote. “There are also reports that he regrets picking JD Vance as his running mate. Sad.”
Donald Trump has said that he intends to debate Harris, although he has also suggested that the next presidential debate should now be moderated by conservative cable channel Fox News. ABC had been set to host a previously scheduled debate between Trump and Biden on September 10.
