Acting French Sports Minister Amélie Oudéa-Castéra has added fuel to growing speculation that Céline Dion is poised to make a comeback performance at the opening ceremony of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
France is set to make history on Friday with its four-hour show unfolding on the River Seine and the foot of the Eiffel Tower rather than in a stadium, with more than 3,000 dancers and 6,000 athletes participating in the event.
Apart from French singer Aya Nakamura, who was confirmed by President Emmanuel Macron in the spring, the line-up of performers is under wraps.
Speculation that Dion will give her first live performance in four-years on Friday has gone into overdrive in recent days following sightings of the mega-star in Paris
Quizzed on the rumors in an interview on the French channel TF1’s Bonjour breakfast show, Oudéa-Castéra said the singer’s presence in the French capital was “not by chance”.
She would not be drawn on whether Dion was set to perform, saying rather: “There are a multitude of possible roles in an opening ceremony.”
Saying that the element of surprise was “capital”, the minister refrained from commenting any further.
She also refused to be drawn on suggestions that Lady Gaga is set to perform, following sightings of the star standing beside a grand piano in a platform on the River Seine on Monday.
“We promised you very big artists,” was all she would say.
