An explosion at a Jose Cuervo tequila factory in Mexico on Tuesday sparked a fire and killed five workers, officials said.
The explosion and fire in the city of Tequila, Mexico, about 40 miles by road northwest of Guadalajara in the western state of Jalisco, prompted evacuations. The fire was later contained.
The Jalisco authorities later said in a statement that five people had been killed and two others were wounded, one seriously.
The explosion occurred after two containers of tequila collapsed at the factory, Víctor Hugo Roldán, the general director of Jalisco’s Civil Protection Department, told reporters. Each held nearly 60,000 gallons of alcohol.
Representatives for Jose Cuervo did not immediately respond to messages on Tuesday night. A woman who answered the phone at Tequila’s fire department said that she was not authorized to comment.
