Newsweek has some top tips to help you solve today’s Wordle puzzle.
Welsh-born engineer Josh Wardle invented Wordle for his girlfriend, but sold it to The New York Times in early 2022 for an undisclosed seven-figure sum.
He made his game public in 2021 and it quickly went viral around the world.
Playing it is quite simple. Every day a mystery five-letter word appears on the NYT games website or app which people must solve. You get at least six attempts to work it out, which you do by typing a word.
A color-coded tile system helps you along the way. Green tiles mean you’ve guessed a correct letter, yellow tiles show a player that letter is in the word but is in the wrong spot, while a gray tile means that letter is not in the word at all.
Every player has their own tactics for solving Wordle, but Erhan Aslan, an expert in applied linguistics at the University of Reading in the United Kingdom, previously shared some insights with Newsweek about ensuring success.
“One thing that I think is important in this game is the starting letter chosen,” Aslan said. “Starting off with words that include commonly used vowels, for example, ‘e’ and ‘a’, consonants such as ‘r’ and ‘t’, and sound sequences might be helpful.
“Choosing a word that starts with ‘q’, ‘z’, ‘j’, or ‘x’, for instance, may not be the best choice. As you get more feedback after a few guesses, users need to draw on some knowledge of phonics to narrow down or eliminate some words that they might be thinking.”
Even celebrities love the daily word game, including Emmy award-winning actor Keegan-Michael Key. He told the NYT in 2023 that Wordle is “a great reason to have a quick check-in with a few of my friends (and get in a little friendly competition). I’ve always been a fan of words and language and any game that can test my acumen.”
The answer to Wednesday’s puzzle will be revealed at the end of this article, so scroll down with caution if you want to work it out for yourself.
