Los Angeles | $3.295 Million
A 1927 Spanish-style house with four bedrooms, three bathrooms and a guest cottage with a full bathroom, on a 0.3-acre lot
This house is in Carthay Circle, an early example of a planned community in Los Angeles and one of the first parts of the city to have underground power lines. It was designed by Horatio W. Bishop, an architect who worked extensively in the neighborhood during the 1920s and 1930s, and retains much of its original charm; the sellers have restored the hardwood floors, the millwork and the colorful tile in one of the bathrooms.
The property is a five-minute walk from La Cienega Park and Community Center, which has baseball fields and a fitness center. Driving to Beverly Hills takes about five minutes. Century City is about 15 minutes away.
Size: 3,816 square feet
Price per square foot: $863
Indoors: Mature hedges and a gate separate the driveway and front courtyard from the street. A glass door with an arched transom window off the courtyard opens into a long, bright hallway with original hardwood floors.
The living room, at the back of the house, has an original fireplace and French doors that open to the back of the property. At the front of the house, just off the entry hall, is a spacious kitchen with blue cabinetry, a built-in desk area, a vintage white-enamel range and enough room for a breakfast table. The dining room, which has arched windows overlooking the courtyard, and an en suite bedroom are off the kitchen.
Three more bedrooms are off the entry hall. The primary suite has a bedroom with a good-sized closet and a bathroom with a walk-in shower. The bedroom across the hall has a wall of built-in shelving and is currently used as a den. It shares a full bathroom that has a tub and separate shower lined with original blue and yellow Craycraft tile with the third bedroom.
The guest cottage, across the courtyard from the main house, has a kitchen with another vintage enamel range and a full bathroom.
Outdoor space: The courtyard, paved with Spanish-style tile, has a fountain, a fireplace and plenty of space for entertaining. The detached garage has been converted into a home office and gym. There is room to park three cars in the driveway.
