New Orleans Saints quarterback Derek Carr has been one of the most consistent players in the NFL over the years. He joined the Saints last offseason on a four-year deal that was worth $150 million, giving New Orleans a new franchise signal-caller.
In his first season with the team, Carr threw for 3,878 yards with 25 touchdowns and eight interceptions. Despite his impressive play, New Orleans ended up missing the postseason, finishing with a record of 9-8.

They will be looking to do more damage this year in his second season with the team but that didn’t stop Carr from reflecting on his previous free agency. He revealed that he was close to signing with the New York Jets before he landed with the Saints.
“I could’ve [signed with New York],” Carr said during an appearance on the Pardon My Take podcast, via gulflive.com. “It just wasn’t the right time for me. There was still like four or five teams I had to hear from. I remember sitting there with (Jets coach Robert Saleh) and he’s like, ‘Look, man, we’d love to have you. It’s up to you.’”
Carr potentially signing with the Jets would have altered a lot around the NFL because New York likely wouldn’t have landed star quarterback Aaron Rodgers with Carr in the picture. Rodgers would have been traded elsewhere and the league would look very different. But none of that matters now, even if it’s interesting to think about what could have happened.
With the Saints looking to get back to the playoffs, Carr knows that the offense will need to be better. New Orleans had some inconsistency on the offensive side of the ball, but the Saints brought in a new offensive coordinator to attempt to mitigate that fact. Klint Kubiak comes over as the new offensive coordinator after working with the San Francisco 49ers as the passing game coordinator last season.
If Carr and Kubiak can connect quickly, it would be the start of a great relationship moving forward. New Orleans has talent along the roster but needs to prove itself on the field. The NFC is a little wide open, especially in the middle of the conference, so there is no reason why the Saints can’t find themselves competing for a playoff spot this season.
