Shannen Doherty meticulously planned her posthumous arrangements down to every last detail before she passed away on Saturday, July 13.
In a January episode of her Let’s Be Clear podcast, the actress expressed her wish to be cremated rather than buried. Doherty shared her desire with her close friend and will executor, Chris Cortazz, explaining her wishes for her ashes to be mixed with those of her father and her beloved dog.
“I want to be mixed with my dog and I want to be mixed with my dad,” she explained, adding a touch of humor by saying the final mixture would be “a healthy mixture of my father, me, and [my dog] Bowie.” Her father, John Doherty, passed away in 2010 following a stroke. Doherty mentioned she had spent years wearing a necklace that contained some of his ashes. Bowie, her loyal German Shepherd, remains alive, so his ashes will later join the Heathers actress and her father’s.
When it came to her funeral, Doherty mentioned in the podcast how she envisioned a “love fest” attended only by close loved ones – much like how she ended up leaving this earth. She wanted to keep the guest list short, admitting there were many people she preferred not to be there.
“I don’t want them there because their reasons for showing up aren’t necessarily the best reasons,” she explained, continuing, “They don’t really like me, you know? And good for them. But they don’t actually really like me enough to show up to my funeral. But they will, because it’s the politically correct thing to do and they don’t want to look bad, so I kind of want to take that pressure off them.”
Just one day before her death, Doherty finalized her divorce with ex-husband Kurt Iswarienko. The documents detailed that they had reached a written agreement regarding their property and rights, which Iswarienko signed on the same day she passed away at age 53. Married since October 2011, the Charmed alum filed for divorce in April 2023, citing no other option despite it being the “last thing [she] wanted.” The proceedings had been contentious, with Doherty alleging delays by her ex, a claim his lawyer disputed.
