Sunny Hostin doesn’t want to hear any more thoughts and prayers. While discussing the July 13 assassination attempt of Donald Trump on this morning’s episode of The View, the co-host said it’s more important than ever to talk about gun control in America.
Hostin â who began her comments by praising President Joe Biden‘s Oval Office address in which he urged Americans to “lower the temperature” and unite regardless of political differences â also acknowledged that “political violence has reached new heights in this country.”
“I know everybody always says it’s too soon to talk about guns because there has been a terrible death of a father of two, that thoughts and prayer should be where we go,” Hostin began, referring to the passing of Corey Comperatore, who died at the Pennsylvania rally where Trump was shot. “I say no. I say now is the time to talk about the common denominator when it came to this assassination attempt is America’s fascination and obsession with owning guns.”
While the audience applauded, Hostin said, “That’s the truth,” as Joy Behar interjected, “It’s not just guns. They’re rifles,” and Hostin appeared to agree, listing off AR-15s and bump stocks as other examples.
“The Supreme Court just found that it’s fine to have bump stocks,” Hostin said, likely referring to the June decision to reverse the ban on bump stocks, which can increase a gun’s firing rate.
“I’d like to think that the issue of gun control would resonate now more, but rather than that, I think what’s gonna happen is, we’re gonna have more of this rhetoric of, ‘Had there only been more good guys with guns, this may not have happened,’” Hostin predicted.
When Behar pointed out that the Secret Service was armed at the Pennsylvania event, Hostin replied, “My guess is they’re gonna say, ‘The Secret Service screwed up, if there were other people with guns…’ and I think that gun ownership will probably, because of this event, go up in this country instead of going down, and that is my fear.”
She closed out her remarks by telling the panel, “I think we need to have an honest and real conversation about real gun control legislation.”
The View airs weekdays at 11/10c on ABC.
