The Miami Dolphins and Buffalo Bills are two of the biggest rivals in the NFL. Both teams are in the AFC East, and the Bills have dominated the division for the past four years. Though the Dolphins got close in 2023, they were still bested by their rivals and landed in second place in the division.

Bills and Dolphins players often take shots at one another, but newly acquired Miami tight end Jonnu Smith took some time to ensure that Buffalo knows just how much he does not like the area.
Smith joined “The Dive Bar Podcast,” where he went into detail about the city of Buffalo, showcasing some deep feelings of dislike for the area and their famous food.
“I don’t know how they did it,” Smith said. “Going from anywhere in the country and then going into Buffalo; That’s got to be the worst place you can be in the world. And the Buffalo wings ain’t even good. They ain’t even good. I’m at Buffalo. I’m at them. I’m throwing all types of shots at Buffalo.”
It’s one thing to go after a rival of the team you are playing at, but Smith decided to make his diss a bit more personal to throw insults at the food that put the city on the map. The buffalo wing might be one of the biggest bar foods — maybe bigger than any food associated with watching football — but Smith indicated the city where it was created does not highlight the food in the best way.
Though the rivalry between Buffalo and Miami is well known, Smith might have just invited fans of both the Dolphins and Bills to begin a deeper argument that extends past what both teams have been able to accomplish in recent years.
The Dolphins have made the playoffs in the past two years under new head coach Mike McDaniel, though they have also lost in the Wild Card Round of both the 2022 and 2023 playoffs. The 2022 season was extra hard, as the Dolphins marched into Buffalo to take on the Bills, but lost with a final score of 34-31.
In 2023, the Dolphins were neck and neck with the Bills for the AFC East crown. They would lose to their rivals in Week 18, leading to the Bills securing their fourth consecutive AFC East title.
With Josh Allen under center, the Bills have been hard to beat, though they have not been able to beat the Kansas City Chiefs and Patrick Mahomes in the playoffs.
Both the Bills and Dolphins have made improvements to their roster this offseason, including Miami bringing in Smith. Smith rebounded his career with the Atlanta Falcons in 2023, securing 582 yards and three touchdowns.
He joins a high-powered Dolphins offense that could finally overtake the Bills for the AFC East. At the very least, Smith is already buying into one of the longest-standing rivalries in the NFL.
