A giant panda cub has been born to one of the world’s only panda triplets.
A giant panda known as Meng Meng gave birth to the female cub on June 18 at Guangzhou Chimelong Safari Park in south China’s Guangdong Province.
The small cub was pictured for the first time on Tuesday, weighing in at 423.5 grams.
Conservationists at the park said the infant was in good health.
“The cub cried loudly at birth, appeared normal, and was in good health,” Chen Shuqing, a giant panda conservation expert at the park, told ECNS.
The arrival marks the first panda birth in five years, according to reports.
The cub’s mother is one of the world’s only surviving panda triplets along with Shuai Shuai and Ku Ku.
The trio will celebrate their 10th birthday this year.
Pandas are a national icon in China and they are known to eat up to 38kg of bamboo every day.
The country has brought them back from the brink of extinction through conservation programmes.
