Jenna Bush Hager and Hoda Kotb were discussing a bold statement from Olivia Wilde‘s seven-year-old daughter on today’s show when Bush Hager shared a rather dismal confession about her own childhood crushes.
The Today hosts were reflecting on a recent social media post from Wilde, which featured a note her daughter had written, saying, “I have a crush on nobody I don’t need a boy.”
While they found the moment “cute,” it spurred Kotb and Bush Hager to reflect on their own first crushes.
“It’s also something that [just] happens. Like, I think I might have been like Olivia Wilde’s daughter, saying, ‘I don’t need no boy!’ But it’s because no boys liked me, you know what I mean?” she told Kotb in a rather crestfallen tone.
Kotb couldn’t help but laugh at her co-host, prompting her to continue, “It was like a self defense thing, like, ‘Oh yeah, I don’t need no boy,’ and I’m like, ‘Ugh, but I wish I had one.’”
She added, “I don’t need one, but I want one.”
Poor Jenna!
The Today host has been open about the awkward moments she experienced while growing up. During one broadcast, she and her twin sister, Barbara Bush, even got into an awkward skirmish on the air about a boy they reportedly both liked in the seventh grade.
During the broadcast, Barbara was quick to set the record straight. “Well, he liked me,” she responded flatly, before later adding, “And then you liked him.”
After Jenna replied, “I don’t think he liked you first,” Barbara explained, “Yes, he did. He told me I was cute, and in seventh grade if a boy tells you you’re cute…”
The squabble swiftly ended, however, when Jenna asked her sister, “But then why did he not ask you, he asked me out?”
“Because then he liked you,” Barbara responded.
Despite the awkward moment, the rest of the show went on without a hitch. And it appears that Jenna’s love life has since recovered: She and Henry Hager have been married to each other for 16 years now, and share three hilarious children.
Today with Jenna and Hoda airs on weekdays at 10/9c on NBC.
