A 16-year-old girl was killed and her sister, 8, was gravely injured when they were struck by a hit-and-run truck driver in a Queens crosswalk on Wednesday afternoon, according to police and sources.
The siblings were trying to cross at the intersection of 47th Avenue and 46th Street in Woodside around 3:30 p.m. when the driver barreled into them, NYPD Chief of Transportation Philip Rivera said.
The sisters were in the crosswalk when they were hit, cops said.
The driver of the white Ready Refresh delivery truck fled but was stopped one block away, authorities said.
Cops said the teen died at the scene in front of IS 125, where her younger sister is a student, according to sources.
The 8-year-old was rushed by EMTs to Cornell Medical Center in critical condition for leg injuries.
Their “inconsolable” mom broke down in tears at the intersection.
“Her eyes were popping out. She’s alive but it looked like she lost a part of herself,” said witness Justin Castillo, 15, who saw the aftermath of the crash.
“The poor girl was very young. Her backpack was right next to her on the side,” he added.
“It was tough to see the mother. She tried to act strong, but anyone who saw her saw she was about to lose her mind.”
Rivera said the driver was in police custody and has yet to be charged.
