Rep. Jamaal Bowman (D-NY) was hit with allegations of plagiarism Friday after several portions of his 2019 Ed.D dissertation were found to be nearly identical to work from other academics.
An analysis of the far-left âSquadâ lawmakerâs Manhattanville College dissertation, conducted by the Daily Wire, discovered âmultiple instancesâ of apparent plagiarism, including some passages that replicate the writings in earlier academic papers nearly word-for-word, along with a number of other obvious blunders.
In one example taken from Bowmanâs 141-page dissertation â âCommunity Schools: The Perceptions and Practices that Foster Broad-Based Collaboration among Leaders with the Community School Ecosystemâ â the former Bronx middle school principal appears to lift University of Delaware Professor Rosalie Rolón-Dowâs summary of an introductory book on critical race theory.
âThe CRT movement drew heavily on the critical legal studies movement, radical feminism, and civil rights ideas to develop a framework that squarely challenged the racialized ways in which law affects people of color (Delgado & Stefancic, 2001; Parker, 2003; Rolon-Dow, 2005),â Bowman wrote.
By comparison, Rolón-Dowâs article reads, âThe movement drew heavily on the critical legal studies movement, radical feminism, and conventional civil rights ideas to develop a framework that more squarely challenged the racialized ways in which laws affect people of color (Delgado & Stefancic, 2001; Parker, 2003).â
Bowman includes Rolón-Dow in his citation but does not use quotation marks in the parts of his text that are verbatim to the academicâs.
In another section of his dissertation, Bowmanâs limited changes to Rolón-Dowâs writing, include adding in a typo, capitalizing âCritical Race Theoryâ and substituting âLatinoâ with âLatinxâ while leaving âLatina.â
Bowman: âFurther, from the perspective of Puerto Rican girls in middle school, Rolon-Dow (2005) explored the intersection between race/ethnicity caring [sic] in the educational experiences of middle school Puerto Rican girls. Critical Race Theory and Latinx/Latina critical theory are used as data analysis frameworks because of their emphasis on the roles of race/ethnicity and racism in shaping the circumstances of individuals and institutions.â
Rolón-Dow: âIn this article, the author explores the intersection between race/ethnicity and caring in the educational experiences of middle school Puerto Rican girls. Critical race theory and Latino/Latina critical theory are used as data analysis frameworks because of their emphasis on the roles of race/ethnicity and racism in shaping the circumstances of individuals and institutions.â
The Daily Wire discovered at least two other instances of apparent plagiarism, where Bowman again summarizes the research of others by copying their exact text rather than paraphrasing.
âIn further explaining authentic care, Antrop-Gonzalez and De Jesus (2006) stated that a powerful combination of high academic expectations and meaningful student- teacher interpersonal relationships form the basis of authentic caring as an alternative to traditional schooling, which is generally rooted in more aesthetic forms of care,â Bowman wrote.
The 2006 piece by Rene Antrop-Gonzalez and Anthony De Jesus reads, âThis powerful combination of high academic expectations and meaningful student-teacher interpersonal relationships form the basis of authentic caring as an alternative to the traditional schooling that many students of color in urban schools experience on a daily basis.â
In yet another part of his paper, Bowman, borrowing from a 2017 article by Tenah K.A. Hunt , Kristen S. Slack , Lawrence M. Berger, wrote: âThis study also found that relatedly, risk for exposure to adversity is not evenly distributed across racial and ethnic subgroups. Hispanic and Black children have disproportionally high rates of maltreatment victimization (USDHHS, 2016) and disproportionally grow up in disadvantaged communities. (p. 392).â
The authors he cribbed from wrote: âRelatedly, risk for exposure to adversity is not evenly distributed across racial and ethnic subgroups. Hispanic and Black children have disproportionally high rates of maltreatment victimization (USDHHS, 2015) and disproportionally grow up in disadvantaged communities.â
The allegations against Bowman come after earlier this year he defended disgraced former Harvard University President Claudine Gay, who resigned in January amid a plagiarism scandal of her own and criticism over her handling of antisemitism at the Ivy League school.
âThis isnât about plagiarism or antisemitism,â Bowman wrote on X on Jan. 2, the day Gay stepped down.
âThis is about racism and intimidation. This makes no one safer. The only winners are fascists who bullied a brilliant & historic Black woman into resignation,â he added. â2024 will be a battle for truth, democracy and our shared humanity.â
Bowman, 48, is facing off against Westchester County Executive George Latimer, 70, in the June 25 Democratic primary for New Yorkâs 16th Congressional District.
A recent Emerson College/WPIX poll showed Bowman trailing Latimer by 17 points â 48% to 31% â among likely primary voters, with 21% undecided.
Bowman did not respond to The Postâs request for comment.
