Taylor Farms claimed Monday the FDA apologized for incorrectly linking the California-based farm to a cyclospora parasitic outbreak that sickened over 1,645 people and hospitalized 141.
The parasite is known for causing watery or explosive diarrhea, according to Cleveland Clinic.
The company had voluntarily recalled Mexican-grown iceberg lettuce Sunday based on FDA guidance, but stated Monday, “Today, we were informed that the FDA made a mistake and this was a false positive.”
“To be clear, at this moment, FDA has not identified a single positive product test result for Cyclospora,” they continued.
“Our thoughts remain with everyone who has fallen ill in this outbreak,” the company added, “We are committed to working with public health authorities as the ongoing outbreak investigation continues.”
The Centers for Disease Control is investigating more than 5,100 additional illnesses.
The FDA’s reversal drew skepticism after Taylor Farms executives reportedly met with White House officials Thursday to distance themselves from the outbreak.
Critics questioned the FDA’s credibility, with writer Nathan Newman speculating, “Like most people, I assume FDA is lying here to help a big Trump donor And this is horrifying.”
Health policy analyst Jenn Kaufman warned, “This unfortunately will only further erode confidence in the CDC and public health.”
