The 2024 UEFA Euros have begun, and it appears MMA superstar Conor McGregor is getting in on the action. The longtime UFC fighter made a sizable bet in favor of Portugal star Cristiano Ronaldo retaining a title that was given to him back in 2021.

McGregor revealed a screenshot of a bet that he has made in the sum of 60,000 for Ronaldo to once again land the Golden Boot. Should Ronaldo retain this honor, McGregor will receive a payout of 900,000. The Irish star stated on X, “60 G’s on @Cristiano to retain his Euro Golden Boot. Siuuu!” The only thing that is unknown at the time is if the bet was made in U.S. dollars, Euros, or some other currency.
The Golden Boot honor is reserved for the player who scores the most goals in the Euros, and Ronaldo was the recipient of the award during the 2020 Euros (which took place in 2021 due to the pandemic).
Ronaldo finished the tournament with five goals and one assist in 360 minutes of action, which gave him the tiebreaker over Patrik Schick of the Czech Republic, who secured five goals and no assists in 404 minutes. Ronaldo became the first Golden Boot winner to secure the award via tiebreaker.
Ronaldo has rejoined the Portugal national football team for the quadrennial tournament, and the club has already gotten off to a hot start. Portugal defeated Czechia 2-1 in their first Group F matchup.
While McGregor has made a sizable bet that Ronaldo will win the Golden Boot this year, the Portugal forward did not score a goal during Tuesday’s matchup. He will have another chance soon, as Portugal will face off against Türkiye on June 22.
Ronaldo is coming off a fantastic season with 46 goals in 48 matches played, with 35 goals coming from playing with Al Nassr in the Professional League. Though there is no telling how many goals Ronaldo will score in the 2024 Euros, McGregor might have made a smart bet considering the football legend has amassed 46 goals this season.
Ronaldo and McGregor have developed a bit of a friendship, especially after the pair were seen speaking to one another in December in Saudia Arabia during the “Day of Reckoning” boxing match when Anthony Joshua took on former UFC heavyweight champion, Francis Ngannou. The image that McGregor shared along with his bet is from the event, as the pair laughed next to one another.
Time will tell if McGregor has made the right bet, but Ronaldo is one of the best scorers on the planet, so it could be viewed as quite a safe bet, even if the bet is for a lot of money.
