After being given unprecedented access to the family life of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle through their Netflix show and other projects in recent years, the public could be about to see less of their two children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, a British news show has heard.
After the duke and duchess did not publicly mark Father’s Day on Sunday, Newsweek‘s chief royal correspondent, Jack Royston, noted that the couple could be entering a “new era” of privacy.
“It’s interesting that we didn’t get any Father’s Day content from Harry and Meghan,” he told Sky News anchor Kay Burley on Monday. “I think they really have hit a new era of definitely wanting to keep their children in private.”
Though Prince Archie has only made two official public appearances since his birth in 2019 and Princess Lilibet hasn’t made any since her birth in 2021, Harry and Meghan have provided fans access to their children through various media projects and rare photo releases over the years.
“They had a period where, having initially said we wouldn’t see much of their kids, they then did let Archie appear in the Oprah interview and in some other content they did for their various shows, and then Princess Lilibet, they released a picture for her first birthday,” Royston said.
“But then we’ve had nothing this year of Lilibet and we’ve had nothing for Father’s Day and it does feel like they’ve now hit a point where we perhaps won’t see the kids again.”
Newsweek approached representatives of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle via email for comment.
Harry and Meghan have set clear boundaries regarding press interest in their children, keeping them out of the view of paparazzi photographers and raising them in the privacy of their exclusive Montecito residence in California.
Though Archie was born in the U.K., since 2020 when the Sussex family moved to the U.S., he has returned only once. This was for a trip celebrating Queen Elizabeth II‘s Platinum Jubilee and also marked Lilibet’s first visit to her father’s home country.
The children are sixth and seventh in the official line of succession to the British throne respectively. As grandchildren of King Charles III, they assumed the titles of “Prince” and “Princess of the United Kingdom” upon his accession in September 2022.
