With 16 days to go until the general election, the campaign is now descending into an ugly series of claims and counterclaims as Labour promotes its economic credentials and the Tories try desperately to seed doubts about its tax plans.
Here’s what to watch today:
- Keir Starmer faces a rare Q&A with actual voters this morning, joining the combative breakfast host Nick Ferrari in the LBC Radio studios from 9 a.m.
- It’s a big day for the Scottish Labour Party. Leader Anas Sarwar unveils his manifesto for voters north of the border in Edinburgh from 10.30 a.m.
- Hundreds of Reform UK supporters — and quite possibly some detractors — are expected at a “meet Nigel Farage” event this evening in Clacton. Farage was buoyed by a second poll that put his party’s support close to the Conservatives.
- POLITICO’s Esther Webber reports that Tory moderates are positioning for potential leadership bids, with Security Minister Tom Tugendhat and Health Secretary Victoria Atkins among those tipped as contenders.
- Channel 4 is hosting a seven-way debate on immigration, law and order at 6.30 p.m. with Conservative Chris Philp, Labour’s Nick Thomas-Symonds, SNP’s Keith Brown, Green Carla Denyer, Lib Dem Daisy Cooper, Plaid Cymru’s Rhun ap Iorwerth and Reform UK’s Richard Tice.
